Work from home is one of the top trending words during Covid 19 pandemic besides social distancing. Many companies around the world and in Vietnam have implemented this new way of working to ensure employees’ health while maintaining work progress. However, there are many difficulties faced by workers while trying to complete their tasks at home on a daily basis:

1. Inadequate facilities

With office staff who are used to work on computers, working from home is not too unfamiliar as everything can be solved online and directly reported to their managers. However, with certain positions such as graphic designers, web developers, they need a quiet space and specialized computers to be able to work from home with optimal conditions to deliver the best outcomes. When the equipment they use is not good enough, this will affect the task efficiency and quality for results. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest drawbacks of working from home.

2. Lack of communication

Communication plays an important role in helping individuals process, discuss and solve tasks quickly and accurately. Talking to coworkers not only facilitates work but also helps us to relieve stress when we need to share the burden emotionally. In the long run, this might even lead to boredom, sadness, demoralization and eventually depression.

3. Easy to be distracted, reduced focus

Work From Home is not the ideal option for people with a short attention span or low ability to concentrate, especially those who have young children. They will have to deal with distractions such as doing house chores (cooking, cleaning, feeding their kids, etc. ) and the interruptions from their loved ones.  They would have to complete their tasks by deadline while at the same time, take care of their families. If not, they would have to work after work hours. This will take a toll on their mental and physical health.

4. Employees cannot be monitored

This is a worry for many business owners and managers when letting staff work from home. Without support tools, they can only supervise employees’ work through emails, reports, online meetings and calls. It is certainly difficult to determine the honesty and trustworthiness of employees that way. Without close supervision on a daily basis, even on an hourly basis, this will always be a challenging issue for many businesses.

It is clear that working from home is popular nowadays. However, the complaints about working from home have always been, number one, loneliness, and number two, productivity.
